The Graduate Record Examination is a test created and administered by the Education Testing Service(GTS). It is used as an admission criteria by most graduate programmes in the United States. It has four sections which aim to measure quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, analytical writing and critical thinking skills of candidates. The importance given to the GRE varies from Department to department. Further the way the scores are looked at also varies from B School to B School. Thus an Engineering department might not consider the verbal score an important component of its admission criteria, while a humanities department may consider it the most important criteria. Increasingly business schools are also accepting the GRE as an admission test in place of the GMAT.
This is always the first task. It consists of two sub sections. The issue task and the argument task. In the issue task one is required to write an essay on an issue from a list of topics that is available on the ETS website. The test taker has 30 minutes to write the essay. In the “Analysis of an issue “ task a test taker has to critique an argument given for logical weakness. He has to suggest ways to improve the argument. He has 30 minutes for this task also.
Each verbal section consists of about 6 text completion, 4 sentence equivalence, and 10 reading comprehension question. Thus each section has 20 questions to be finished in 30 minutes. The verbal section was significantly restructured in the new GRE with the removal of rote based vocabulary learning. Yet the new GRE remains quite a vocab heavy test with both text completion and sentence equivalence questions requiring a fluency with vocabulary. There are two verbal ability sections in each GRE
The Quantitative Section tests high school level mathematics and has 20 questions to be done in 35 minutes. Concepts checked include those of arithmetic, numbers, algebra and geometry. Each quantitative section consists of about 8 quantitative comparisons, 9 problem solving items, and 3 data interpretation questions. Since 2011 there are also numeric entry questions where one has to key in a number and multiple answer questions where one has to select multiple answers which may be correct.
Apart from the two quantitative and two verbal sections there is also usually an experimental section by the ETS which is used for psychometry for future tests. It may be either a verbal section or a quantitative aptitude section. It does not count towards ones finals score. However one must perform equally well on all sections as there is no way to identify which is the experimental section.
The test is of 3 hours and 45 minutes including 1 minute breaks between sections and a 10 minute break after the third section. The test fees was $195 as of March 2016.
While earlier the GRE was scored out of 800 for both the verbal and the quantitative aptitude sections. Currently each of these sections is scored out of 170. The range of scores is 130-170. Thus a person can get all questions wrong , yet he would score 130; he may get one or more questions wrong and yet score a perfect 170. The analytical writing task is scored from 0 to 6, in half point increments.
The GRE is adaptive in a multistage manner. Thus within a section there is no adaptability of the difficulty of questions like the GMAT, however once a section is completed the difficulty increases or decreases for the next section based on the individuals performance in the previous section. This is intended to make the testing more comfortable for test takers and not unduly penalise those who are poor starters and also give them a decent opportunity to deal with the stress on test day
