BY Ankit Gaur

CAT 2020 was held on Sunday, November 29, 2020. The exam was conducted in three slots that is Forenoon Session (8:30-10:30AM), Afternoon Session (12:30-2:30PM) and Evening Session (4:30-6:30PM). It was a 120 Minutes (Two hours) exam divided into three sections of 40 Minutes each.

The first section is VARC (Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension), the second section is LRDI (Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation) and the third section is QA (Quantitative Aptitude)

Every correct answer response will add 3 marks and every incorrect answer will deduct 1 mark. There is no negative marking for TITA type questions. You could not change the order of sections. You also could not go back to a previous section or jump the section.

The major change of CAT 2020 exam was duration and number of questions. The number of questions in CAT 2020 decreased to 76  from 100 Questions in CAT 2019, CAT 2018 or CAT 2017.

Duration of the CAT Paper was also decreased to 40 minutes per section from 60 minutes per section in CAT 2019, CAT 2018 or CAT 2017.

Section 1 (VARC)

VARC Section of all three sessions was average-difficult and roughly of the same difficulty level.

There were 18 Questions based upon Reading Comprehension {two RC passages of 5 Questions each and two RC passage of 4 Questions each}  and 8 questions based upon Verbal Ability including 3 Para Jumbles, 2 Odd One Out and 3 Para Summaries.

The level of difficulty of VARC section in CAT 2020 was same as CAT 2019 but definitely tougher than VARC section of CAT 2018 and CAT 2017.

Section 2 (LRDI)

LRDI Section of all three sessions was average-difficult. LRDI Section of Evening Session was slightly tougher than Afternoon session and LRDI Section of Afternoon Session was slightly tougher than Forenoon session.

There were a total of 5 Sets with 24 Questions, 3 Sets of 4 Questions Each and 2 Sets of 6 Questions each.

The level of difficulty of LRDI section of CAT 2020 was roughly same as the LRDI level of CAT 2019, CAT 2018 orCAT 2017.

Section 3 (QA)

QA Section of all three sessions was average and roughly of the same difficulty level.

There were a total of 26 Questions including 6 questions for which answer needed to be typed. There were around 10-12 Questions of Arithmetic, 6-8 Question of Algebra, 4-6 questions of Geometry and 3-5 Questions from Numbers and Modern maths.

The level of difficulty of QA section of CAT 2020 was roughly same as CAT 2017 or CAT 2019 but definitely easier than the QA section of CAT 2018.

Detailed Analysis of Section: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC)

VARC Section of all three sessions was Average to Difficult and roughly of the same difficulty level.

4 RC’s featured a total of 18 questions; 2 RC’s with 5 questions each & 2 RC’s with 4 questions each. These 18 RC questions were broadly of 3 categories, a) Fact based  b) Exception based (What is not true according to the passage) c) Inference based. Most of the questions were inference based. Interestingly there were no questions on identifying tone of the passage.

Verbal Ability had a total of 8 questions with 3 types: a) Summary of a passage, b) Odd one out, c) Parajumbles. Of these 3 categories, Summary of a passage was MCQ type and Odd one out and Parajumbles were non MCQ type. No questions based upon Vocabulary, Grammar, Logical Continuation & Critical Reasoning were asked.

Detailed Analysis of Section: Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation (LRDI)

LRDI Section of CAT 2020 was Average to Difficult.

There were no direct sets of DI (Data Interpretation). Sets were either based upon LR (Logical Reasoning) or LRDI (Beautiful mixture of Data & LOGIC).

Detailed Analysis of Section: Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

QA Section of all three sessions of CAT 2020 was Average and roughly of the same difficulty level.

The level of difficulty of QA section was higher than the QA section of CAT 2019 & CAT 2017 but lesser than CAT 2018.

The Arithmetic part of QA Section was definitely easier compared to other parts, because there were enough number of doable questions. AGians could see most of the questions directly from AnkGanit’s class lectures/notes.

The QA section was dominated by Arithmetic with 11-12 questions including 2-3 Questions from Percentages, 1 from PLD, 1 from SI CI, 1 from Time & Work, 2-3 Questions from TSD, 1-2 from Ratio & Proportion, 2-3 from Average, Alligation & Mixtures. There were 8-9 questions of Algebra including 2 question from Modulus, 1 questions from sequence, 2 from functions, 2 from LOG and 1 from equations. There were 3-4 Questions of Geometry and 2-3 Questions from Modern Maths and Number System. 18 Questions are objective type with 4 options and  8 TITA questions are there. TITA type questions means for which answer needed to be typed.

Cheers!!
